Stamped Concrete vs. Natural Stone

March 1, 2025 Larry Rowe

Stamped concrete gives you the look of natural stone at a lower cost. Here is how they compare.

If you want the look of natural stone for your patio, driveway, or walkway, you have two options: actual natural stone or stamped concrete that mimics stone. Here is how they compare.

Cost

  • Stamped concrete: $8–$18 per sq ft
  • Natural stone (flagstone, slate): $15–$30+ per sq ft

Stamped concrete gives you the stone look at roughly half the cost.

Durability

  • Stamped concrete: 20–30+ years with proper maintenance (reseal every 2–3 years)
  • Natural stone: 30–50+ years (individual stones can be reset if they shift)

Both are durable. Stamped concrete is a single monolithic pour — if it cracks, the crack is visible. Natural stone has individual joints that can shift but can also be reset.

Maintenance

  • Stamped concrete: Reseal every 2–3 years, clean as needed. Low maintenance.
  • Natural stone: Joint maintenance (re-sanding, weed control), occasional resetting of shifted stones. Moderate maintenance.

Which Is Right for You?

For most North Alabama homeowners, stamped concrete is the better value. You get the stone look at a lower cost, with less maintenance and a faster installation. The concrete is poured as one piece, so there are no individual joints to maintain.

Natural stone is worth it if you want the authentic material, have a higher budget, and do not mind the maintenance.
