Concrete vs. Pavers vs. Asphalt

February 10, 2025 Larry Rowe

Comparing concrete, pavers, and asphalt for North Alabama driveways. Cost, durability, maintenance, and which is right for you.

If you need a new driveway, you are probably comparing three options: concrete, pavers, and asphalt. Each has pros and cons. Here is how they compare for North Alabama homeowners.

Concrete Driveways

Cost: $6–$15 per sq ft Lifespan: 20–30+ years Maintenance: Low — occasional sealing Pros: Durable, low-maintenance, clean look, handles heavy vehicles, can be stamped or stained Cons: Higher upfront cost than gravel, can crack if poorly installed

Concrete driveways are our recommendation for most North Alabama homeowners. They handle our hot summers and clay soil well, and with proper prep, they last decades.

Paver Driveways

Cost: $10–$25 per sq ft Lifespan: 25–50 years (individual pavers can be replaced) Maintenance: Moderate — weed control, occasional re-leveling, re-sanding Pros: Classic look, individual pavers can be replaced, no cracking Cons: Highest cost, weeds in joints, can shift if base is poor, more maintenance

Pavers are beautiful but cost more and require more upkeep.

Asphalt Driveways

Cost: $4–$8 per sq ft Lifespan: 15–20 years Maintenance: High — sealcoating every 2–3 years, repairs for cracking Pros: Lower upfront cost, flexible (handles minor settling) Cons: Softens in Alabama heat, cracks within a few years, needs regular sealing, petroleum smell

Asphalt is cheaper upfront but costs more over time with maintenance and earlier replacement.

Our Recommendation

For most North Alabama homeowners, concrete is the best balance of cost, durability, and maintenance. It costs more than asphalt upfront but lasts longer and requires less maintenance. It costs less than pavers and is easier to maintain.
