Driveway Repair vs. Replacement

March 20, 2025 Larry Rowe

Not sure if your driveway needs repair or full replacement? Here is how to tell the difference.

Your driveway is cracking, settling, or looking worn. The question is: can it be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?

Here is how to tell the difference.

Signs Your Driveway Can Be Repaired

  • Hairline surface cracks — can be filled to prevent water intrusion
  • Minor spalling — surface flaking can be resurfaced
  • One settled section — slab jacking can lift it back to level
  • Surface stains — resurfacing or overlay covers old, stained concrete
  • Isolated damage — if the rest of the driveway is solid, spot repairs make sense

If your driveway is under 15 years old and the damage is limited, repair or resurfacing may be the right call. It typically costs 50–70% less than replacement.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Replacement

  • Extensive, deep cracking — cracks that go through the slab
  • Multiple settled sections — indicates widespread sub-base failure
  • Spider-web cracking — indicates structural failure throughout
  • Tree root damage — roots have heaved large sections
  • Age (20+ years) — concrete at the end of its lifespan
  • Drainage issues — water pools on or near the driveway

If your driveway has multiple problems or is over 20 years old, replacement is usually the better investment.
