Why Sub-Base Preparation Matters for Concrete
The dirt work underneath your concrete is more important than the pour itself. Here is why sub-base prep matters.
When homeowners think about a concrete project, they think about the pour — the truck backing up, the concrete flowing, the trowel smoothing the surface. But the most important part of your concrete project happens before the truck ever arrives.
It is the sub-base preparation — the excavation, compaction, and grading underneath the concrete.
Why the Sub-Base Matters
Concrete is only as good as what is underneath it. If the sub-base is:
- Uncompacted — it will settle, and the concrete will crack and sink.
- Organic (topsoil, roots) — it will decompose, creating voids under the slab.
- Poorly graded — water will pool under or around the concrete, causing damage.
- Unstable (wet clay) — it will expand and contract, heaving the slab.
A perfect pour on a bad base will still fail. A mediocre pour on a great base will last decades.
What Proper Sub-Base Prep Includes
- Excavation — removing topsoil and organic material to reach stable sub-soil
- Compaction — pressing the sub-base so it does not settle later
- Grading — sloping for drainage away from structures
- Geotextile fabric — sometimes used to separate soil layers and prevent mixing
- Base material — adding and compacting gravel or crushed stone if needed
Why We Do Both Dirt Work and Concrete
This is why we do excavation and concrete as one crew. The crew that excavates is the same crew that pours. There is no finger-pointing, no miscommunication, and one crew accountable for the result.
